UNDERSTANDING GUM DISEASE TREATMENT

What is Gum Disease Treatment?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums and the structures that support your teeth. It begins when plaque builds up along and beneath the gumline, causing inflammation. In its early stage, known as gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily when brushing. This stage is reversible with the right treatment.

If left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, where the infection spreads beneath the gumline, destroying the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place, leading to tooth loss.

At Notting Hill Dental Clinic, our in-house periodontist treats all stages of gum disease. For most patients, non-surgical deep cleaning beneath the gumline is sufficient to restore gum health. For more advanced cases, our periodontist can perform surgical procedures to restore the gum and bone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Disease Treatment

What are the signs of gum disease?

Common signs of gum disease include gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, red, swollen, or tender gums, gums that appear to be pulling away from your teeth, and teeth that feel loose or have moved. Many people experience no pain in the early stages, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important.

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease, causing inflammation of the gums without damage to the underlying bone. With prompt treatment and improved oral hygiene, gingivitis is fully reversible. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage in which the infection has spread to the supporting bone and tissue, causing irreversible damage if left untreated. Both conditions are effectively treated at Notting Hill Dental Clinic.

Is gum disease treatment painful?

Non-surgical treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no discomfort during the procedure. Some patients experience mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards, which typically settles quickly. Surgical procedures are also performed under local anaesthetic, with detailed aftercare guidance provided to ensure a comfortable recovery.

How long does gum disease treatment take?

Treatment length depends on the severity of your condition. Mild to moderate cases may require one to two non-surgical appointments, whilst more advanced periodontitis may require a course of treatment over several months, including surgical intervention and ongoing maintenance. Dr Zafeiri will outline a clear timeline during your initial consultation.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis can be fully reversed with professional treatment and improved home care. Periodontitis, whilst not reversible in terms of bone loss already sustained, can be effectively stabilised and managed to prevent further progression — allowing patients to keep their natural teeth for life with the right ongoing care.

Is gum disease linked to other health conditions?

Yes. Research has established links between periodontal disease and a number of systemic health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory conditions, and pregnancy complications. Treating gum disease effectively is therefore important for your overall health, not just your oral health.

How can I prevent gum disease from returning?

The most effective way to prevent gum disease from recurring is a combination of excellent home oral hygiene — twice-daily brushing and daily interdental cleaning — and regular professional maintenance appointments with our hygienist or periodontist. Dr Zafeiri will design a personalised maintenance programme suited to your individual risk level.

Do you offer NHS gum disease treatment?

We are a private dental practice and do not offer NHS treatment. However, we offer 0% finance over 12–60 months to help make specialist periodontal care as accessible as possible.
